Recently I came across an article about the great Leonardo da Vinci. It contained the usual information about his multiple skills in art, engineering, architecture, anatomy, etc. It also mentioned a few of his personality traits, for example: his inability to finish some of his works, his insatiable curiosity and his great sense of humor. Finally, they mentioned the unique writing style of his notes, they were written backwards, unreadable unless you hold up a mirror against the page. The author stated that he may have used this kind of writing to confuse anyone trying to copy one of his ideas, or as a practical joke for anyone trying to read it. But the last remark really troubled me. The author stated that "experts" thought that Leonardo da Vinci probably had some kind of learning disability that caused him to want to write in mirror style.
I wonder if Leonardo was born today whether or not he would be labeled ADD/ADHD, LD or whatever other label modern society makes up daily. My personal view on this is that we may never know exactly why the genius da Vinci used that writing style, but what I do know is that a small percentage of the population is able to do that naturally. I am one of those who can do it naturally, and the reason why I do it is simply because it allows my brain to focus more intently on what I am writing, especially when what I am writing is tedious and boring. I actually enjoy writing mirror style, and I also like the reactions of people when they try to decipher something I wrote, thinking that it is some kind of secret code when all it really is words written backwards.
The reason why I focus more when mirror writing may be because I am using more parts of my brain in order to accomplish a simple and easy task such as writing. Now, I may not be a genius like Leonardo da Vinci, but I know that mirror writing allows me to finish a boring task like writing, so that I won't procrastinate.
